Yup, that’s me — your Boomer Mom, La Mere, working after work (again) on what’s turning out to be the project of a lifetime; a legacy-level project that I believe can help make the crypto space safer and better for degens and debutants, Moms and Crypto Mavericks alike.
Why is my crypto story a little different? Well, to start, I’m definitely not your typical Crypto Chad. I’m an Asian American woman in my early 50s, married for over two decades, with two Gen Z kids, and a nearly two-decade-long career in my corporate dream job. So the story of this mid-century Mom from the suburbs finding Crypto and ending up on the Boomer on Base project isn’t your typical read here on Medium. Instead, my crypto story is one of renewed self-discovery and a reaffirmation that second acts can be even bigger and more exciting than the first. The long and short of it is that crypto opened up a whole new world of learning for me, and the Boomer on Base project, specifically, came to me just when I needed it.
My professional life, where I still work my dream job, is great. But since I turned 50, I’ve been searching for something else to reignite my passion for adventure, deepen my curiosity about the world, and reinforce my lifelong love of learning. I’ve been in the midst of an existential crisis, at the heart of which is the overwhelming feeling that I’m not done and a burning desire to find and conquer my next Everest. At a time when most women my age are starting to think of retirement and grandkids and bingo nights, my hunger for life and my life-long love of conquering the impossible still burns brightly in my belly.
Who knew that the Universe would answer my calls to the heavens with Crypto?
Incredibly, my journey into crypto started less than 60 days ago (at the time of this writing) when I watched my first YouTube video and joined my first crypto community. And now I find myself gleefully diving into market stats, economic projections, and research (so much research) on exciting projects in finance innovation. My non-working, non-family time for the last seven weeks has been hopelessly devoted to sharpening my crypto acumen and learning how to hold on for dear life. The learning curve has been near-vertical and non-stop.
A month ago, I couldn’t have told you the difference between DCA and DNA, and a Fibonacci line sounded like something I should go check out at Barney’s. Yet here I am, learning what the most important narratives are in the crypto space, tuning in to updates from the FED and learning about the role of meme coins in shaping the future of Cryptocurrency and the blockchain. Clearly, I am addicted. And the Boomer on Base project has been the gateway drug that keeps me coming back for more.
In truth, Dear Reader, Boomer has become the real-world manifestation of my long-held mantra in life: When someone offers you a seat on a rocket ship, you get on and strap in.
When I first heard the genesis story of Boomer, I was intrigued to say the least. A group of meme coin enthusiasts getting rugged by another unscrupulous dev, decided they’d had enough and were going to try and do something about it. They jumped on a Zoom call, revealed their real faces and vowed to do what they could to help people avoid similar devastating experiences.
Not long after the original group decided to reclaim the project as a CTO (community take over), I received my first-ever airdrop of a meme coin — and it was Boomer. Once I verified it was legit I filled my first little bag, jumped headlong into the Boomer Telegram and never looked back.
At first, I sat (mostly in silence at first) on the 24/7 voice chat, and just learned and observed. But never one to stay silent, it didn’t take long for me to start piping up on the VC, where I gave a voice to the constant parade of thoughts and questions that sprung up in my head.
Fast forward to present day, and I’m proud to say that I volunteer whenever and however I can to help the core team, with a special focus on an important corner of growing Boomer — Lady Boomers — as my contribution to this project. Recognizing the tremendous opportunity Crypto presents for stronger financial literacy and economic independence for women, Boomer has made reaching out to this audience a priority for the project.
The statistics are hard to ignore:
- As of 2023, close to 155 million of the 420 million digital currency holders worldwide are women.
- At the end of 2023, male crypto investors in the United States still outnumbered women investors 4:1. But crucial for crypto growth and adoption, 53% of the crypto curious are women.
- Finally, the year over year % increase of women holding Crypto went from 18% in 2023, to 29% so far in 2024.
When it comes to continued growth and mass adoption opportunities for crypto, the future is clearly female. When it comes to their financial health and well-being, women tend to do more analysis and research and are generally more risk-averse than their male counterparts. So there is a need for education, varied opportunities for learning, and a supportive, strong community that is smart enough to see the promise and value of women (young and old) in crypto. Enter Boomer on Base. Boomer’s focus on education, safety, and community support is a natural narrative that lends itself to onboarding more than half of the crypto-curious in a fun and often humorous way.
With the normalizing of crypto as part of our financial portfolios, the advent of Bitcoin and Ethereum ETF approvals, and projects like Boomer who make education and safety a main priority, it’s becoming easier for women (and really anybody) to get into Crypto. And while operating safely in the space still has a long way to go, a very unique project like Boomer is poised to be part of positive first steps to bringing a higher level of comfort and confidence for women crypto investors — especially older ones. I can’t wait for the day when charcuterie-fueled neighborhood book clubs are replaced with all-women crypto covens that do technical analyses on charts while sipping on a fine chianti.
This has been an auspicious beginning of my crypto journey. I have no idea where it will take me. But one thing I know today is that while I initially came for the Boomer coin, I’m staying for the Boomer (and esp. the Lady Boomer) community.
